New Leadership Model: Changing the Playing Field

New Leadership Model: Changing the Playing Field

By Dean Kashiwagi

August 2012

Abstract
Leadership is not management.  Leadership uses identification of expertise and the alignment of expert resources.  Management uses direction and control to mitigate risk and increase performance.  Leadership hires experts.  Management assumes they are the experts.  Leadership changes the environment.  Management changes the people.  Leaders look at the environment from 30K feet.  Managers look at the environment with a technical perspective.  As the professional environment changes [technology, transparency, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and sustainable construction and energy conservation], leadership becomes the key and not technical expertise.
